The Opportunity

Next Chapter Society is a lean team of the Executive Director and the Board of Directors working with a mandate to grow our programs and resources province wide. Reporting to the President, Board of Directors, the Executive Director has the overall operational responsibility for the implementation of board approved policies and strategic direction. The Executive Director leads and manages the organization by directing, developing, managing and coordinating all programs including the review and expansion of funding and programs. The Executive Director is responsible for coordinating and administering the day-to-day operations of Next Chapter Society.

The primary function of this role is to work in collaboration with the Marketing and Fund Development Committee and the Board of Directors in the development, coordination and implementation of fundraising activities including, but not limited to, fund development planning, grant writing, and managing the financial reporting.  Other activities include general administration, and divorce, separation and grief program administration and development.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Fund Development and Marketing

  • Develop, implement and strategically manage a 3-year fundraising plan based on the Next Chapter Society approved strategic plan.

  • Develop, implement and strategically manage a 3-year marketing and communication plan in conjunction with the fundraising and program plans.

  • Develop, implement, manage and evaluate of all activities related to individual giving, major donors, sponsorships, donor stewardship, grant writing, donor communications, and fundraising events and campaigns.

  • Build solid prospect management, research and donor stewardship programs to support the growth of revenue generated by fundraising in the organization.

  • Research, evaluate, develop and implement alternative revenue opportunities.

  • Liaise with and support third party fundraising initiatives as appropriate.

  • Prepares and monitors fundraising and marketing and communication budget. Meet or exceed the annual fundraising revenue targets.

  • Responsible for the structure and management of the fundraising database, ensuring accurate donor and prospect data tracking.

  • Develop, implement and engage board and community members in fundraising activities.

  • Execute marketing and other communication efforts.

  • Build successful long-term relationships with donors, volunteers and external partners.

  • Create a social media presence, manage, monitor and respond to social media inquiries.

  • Create fundraising marketing materials, including, but not limited to thank you letters, pledge forms, donor newsletters, etc. and ongoing correspondence.

  • Manage Next Chapter Society website, communication channels (e.g.: social media, digital media, marketing materials, media plans) and fundraising channels (e.g.: CanadaHelps).

  • Recruit, train, manage, and appreciate The Friends of Next Chapter Volunteer pool.

Compliance, Strategic Management and Administration

  • Report to and work closely with the Board of Directors to seek their involvement in fundraising and to increase the overall visibility of the organization.

  • Participate in strategic planning and implementation as related to fundraising activities.

  • Work with the Treasurer and Book Keeper to lead and develop the planning and operation of the annual budget.

  • Serve as the primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents, the media and the general public.

  • Provide leadership and direction to committees responsible for annual special events.

  • Adheres to Canada Revenue Agency guidelines, federal and provincial legislation, AGLC guidelines and regulations, and non-profit best practices and standards.

  • Ensure all compliance reporting is completed in a satisfactory and timely manner.

Program Administration and Development

  • Liaise with the Program Development Committee on the review and implementation of The Next Chapter Program including the promotion and administration of The Next Chapter Program.

  • Liaise with Rainbows Canada on the training and administration of Rainbows Canada Facilitators and sites in Alberta

  • Liaise with The Next Chapter Program and Rainbows Canada Provincial Facilitators, Site Coordinators, and community partners.

The Ideal Candidate

Successful Executive Directors come from many backgrounds. The ideal candidate for Next Chapter Society will have lived experience and successes in fund development, fundraising, grant writing, community engagement, donor, volunteer and community stewardship, and leading projects and groups.

As the ideal candidate, you will exercise tact, good judgement, confidentiality, and discretion while upholding high standards of performance and accountability in a multi-tasking environment.  Success will be achieved by adopting an outlook which embraces change as a constant and by proactively managing a large and constantly fluctuating workload. To be considered, we are seeking candidates who possess the following:

  • University Degree or College Diploma with related experience

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working with the not-for-profit sector

  • Demonstrated experience working in fundraising and managing fundraising campaigns

  • Proven ability to raise funds in the community and develop and maintain partnerships

  • Experience with major donor development, sponsorships, donor management, marketing and communications are key for this position

  • Excellent communication and engagement skills

  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others

  • Organizational and planning

  • Experience with Microsoft office

  • Ability to build networks and relationships

  • Related professional designation (CFRE) or working towards the designation would be an asset

Compensation, Hours and Work Location

  • Salary range – $73,000 to $78,000

  • Next Chapter Society offers a competitive not-for-profit compensation package which includes a comprehensive benefits package, and a strong work-life balance.

  • Hours of work are variable to fulfill responsibilities. Some evenings and weekends may be required.

  • Location is the Jerry Forbes Centre for Community Spirit (12122 68 St) with flexible work from home opportunities.
