Statement from AFP Edmonton & Area Chapter Regarding Racism in the AFP Greater Toronto Chapter

June 6, 2023

The Association of Fundraising Professionals Edmonton & Area Chapter would like to express our concerns regarding the reports provided by Nneka Allen, Mide Akerewusi and Múthoní Kariuki of racism they experienced during their tenure with the AFP Greater Toronto Chapter. We applaud their bravery and acknowledge the strength it takes to share their experiences publicly.

No acts of racism should be tolerated.

AFP Global has strongly expressed that IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, access) is a key pillar to the strategic plan. The first goal within AFP Canada’s current strategic plan is to promote inclusion, diversity, equity and access (IDEA). The recent appointment of Mide Akerewusi as Interim Chair of the AFP Greater Toronto Chapter for the next 18 months is a welcome next step towards reparation however we stand with Mide in his recent post that more must be done.

We ask that these actions outlined are taken to demonstrate AFP’s commitment to IDEA.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals Edmonton & Area Chapter remains dedicated to our own learning journey and strongly encourages our members to do the same. As an AFP Chapter Board, we have committed to taking the following actions:

1. We are conducting a comprehensive review of our Whistleblower policy and will be seeking the input of our membership to ensure that it is sufficient and transparent

2. We are thoroughly examining all our policies and procedures through an IDEA lens.

3. We are building on our current IDEA training initiatives to include board and membership training on anti-racism and unconscious biases.

Recognizing that these steps mark the beginning of our journey, our commitment goes beyond words. Collectively we can work toward a more equitable and accepting community through these actions and a culture of inclusivity. We also acknowledge with humility that we will not always get it right but that we will continue to do the hard work of always being reflective and committing to finding prompt and respectful resolution when harm occurs.

Sincerely,

The Association of Fundraising Professionals Edmonton & Area Chapter Board of Directors
